The Turning Point, 2005, mixed medium, 8.5 ft
do to the nature of material the piece does not photo well... it is now in my Brooklyn studio and available to view upon request

The point in one’s life when all seems to stand still, ever as much for a brief moment, in which you realize you have grown… your life has changed forever… and while in this seemingly silent moment, we reflect back on who we thought we were and have become… seeing in our quick review of the past we recognize the specific events, people, and places which had an impact on us… as well as the results from our own actions and decisions… all leading us to ‘The Turning Point’.

This brief moment of reflection and realization is not the end but a new beginning… a new stage in one’s self-actualization.

My personal symbolism… the pyramid with lines running parallel racing toward the top portion of the point is one’s life… the primary lines which run the course of the piece from bottom to top are one’s core…. Family, friends, beliefs, values…. The lines which drop off the edge of the pyramid on the way up are all of the other non-core experiences, people, events… anything which impacted us in some way… it could be as small as the person who held a door open for us or a person we held the door open for…

The base is steel, an add on, while pondering how to construct the stand for the primary part…. Being steel is ideal for the thought behind the pyramid and the core… because in our epiphany there is a vital part we must not lose sight of … in order to allow for our future growth… we must not forget or deny the memory of who we are and that is our past… where we came from… who we were… Don’t lose your base…

The Coal is symbolic of the cliché ‘a diamond in the rough’… however, through living and growing stronger from tragic as well as celebratory times, we have the potential to become diamonds… thus the tip of the point has a diamond on its peak…. From coal to preciousness.

However as much, life is a continuation,,, ‘The Turning Point’ is never ending… the pyramid of life starts once more after that split second moment in time of personal acceptance of who we are… the diamond continues to expand… not knowing when its end will come but knowing it can continue to grow.
